My Favorite Fantasy Series on Netflix

Hi, there, I hope you’re all doing well! Today I’m here to share my favorite fantasy series currently available to watch on Netflix! There are plenty more series that I love, but these are some of the ones that I can always go back to rewatch when I need something that I know I like or that won’t bore me. Trying out new shows only to be very bored after a few episodes is something very tiring for me so, trust me when I say I rewatch more than not…

As I haven’t been all that inspired to write bookish posts, I decided to start sharing more of my love of tv shows and movies with you again! These posts will be in the form of recs or perhaps even reviews sometimes, but I’m aiming for just one post a month at least for now. Hope you enjoy it!

(Also, I’ve elected to put all of these in a random order.)

Fate: The Winx Saga

  • 2021 – ?
  • 1 season – 6 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fate: The Winx Saga is a recent remake of the original animated series and I really enjoyed it! I binged it when it first came out in January and have since watched it again. It’s a remake but I never expected it to be very similar to the original series, so I wasn’t disappointed. It works best as a complementary series or if you just look at it as a completely separate series. Fate is fun, fast-paced, and full of action, not to mention it has a great soundtrack! I loved how they brought the characters to life, especially Bloom! (Though Stella took a while to get used to!)

The only major problem this series has is the whitewashing and overall lack of diversity; there are maybe 3 characters of color and 1 or maybe 2 that happen to be bisexual? You need to do better, Netflix! (So, it’s a bit of a problematic fave…)

Locke & Key

  • 2020 – ?
  • 1 season – 10 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I think Locke & Key might be one of the most underrated tv series on Netflix. I saw it trending for a little while just after it premiered but rarely anyone talking about it since. I personally really enjoyed it! (I remember sitting down to watch it in the mornings or during lunch before I had to go to class and feeling guilty about watching so many episodes in a few days when I should be studying… )

Locke & Key follows the Locke family as they arrive at a little coastal town in Maine after a horrible tragedy strikes their family, and move into the ancestral family home – Key House. As they begin to settle into their new life, the three children of the family soon begin to realize there’s far more to the house than meets in the eye – in the form of magical golden keys!

It’s a truly mysterious and intriguing story, with some creepy turn of events, lots of action, and even some morally grey characters. The main thing I disliked about this series was the secondary characters. Frankly, I thought they were pretty much unnecessary to the story as boring and annoying as they were…

Shadow and Bone

  • 2021 – ?
  • 1 season – 8 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I will at some point publish my series review and discussion (with lots of spoilers) for Shadow and Bone, but long story short – I loved this series and binged on premiere day!

Shadow and Bone is amazing and if you’re reading this post you’re likely a reader who’s heard plenty of gushing and fangirling about this series, characters, and actors (especially Milo the Goat) on all platforms of social media. So I’ll just say I thought it was a great adaptation, I loved it, and I’ve already started rewatching it!

Sweet Home

  • 2020 – ?
  • 1 season – 10 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

Sweet Home is Korean horror series based on a webtoon of the same name and it follows a group of neighbors as they find themselves in the middle of a disturbing disease outbreak that turns people into literal monsters that can’t be killed.

It’s bloody and gruesome, thrilling and intriguing and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was watching it! Just so much fun, and with a few emotional moments as well! I definitely recommend it!

The Witcher

  • 2019 – ?
  • 1 season – 8 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Witcher is an incredible, bloody, and action-packed tale of magic, monsters, and an extremely grumpy, wholesome, and hot main character! (Essentially.) I was instantly obsessed. It’s fun, intriguing, a bit eerie, and rather dark. In the beginning, the chronology and POV of the different characters may leave you confused but throughout the story, you quickly begin to piece together the intricate turn of events.

It’s an adaptation of The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski which has also led to a series of games for Nintendo Switch. I don’t want to read the book series as I’ve read some contradicting and unflattering reviews, but I might get the game one day, it sounds fun!

I was basically obsessed with The Witcher in the first two months of 2020 and I’ve watched it maybe 3 times total?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

  • 2018 – 2020
  • 4 seasons – 36 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a darker remake of the popular 90´s sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch. It’s bloody, has characters that are morally grey af, and it’s just very fun and unpredictable in general. (Oh, and the outfits and overall aesthetic are flawless!)

Frankly, the last two seasons were a bit of a letdown for me. The conflicts just seemed like a bit of a stretch and ended up more ridiculous than scary most of the time. But it was still very entertaining to watch! (A must-watch every October for me!)

Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra

I could not find a decent ATLA trailer ugh!? so here’s a trailer for just LOK instead.

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008): 3 books – 62 episodes
  • The Legend of Korra (2012-2014): 4 books – 52 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ATLA is hands-down the most brilliant fantasy series here. It’s flawless. Pure fun with some emotional scenes, good moral lessons, hilarious shenanigans, and it’s just overall extremely wholesome! It’s also extremely popular so I don’t really think I even need to say more? If for some reason you still haven’t watched and rewatched ATLA several times, please go do it soon!

The Legend of Korra is the sequel series to ATLA, following Korra the next Avatar reincarnation. LOK is also pretty fun! It could never be as great as ATLA in my opinion, but I’m not trying to compare it or judge it the same way I would another sequel series because this fantasy universe just holds a very special place in my heart.

Honorable Mentions

Tidelands

  • 2018
  • 1 season – 8 episodes
  • My rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

Tidelands is a short fantasy series set in a small, isolated coastal town in Australia. This town is surrounded by mysteries and unsavory characters, but it’s the mermaid myths and legends that really make it interesting. I really enjoyed Tidelands, but it’s by far the most flawed of all of these series. It’s lacking a bit in contextual information (about basically every aspect of the story) and it also had a few dull moments, but I loved the fantasy aspects and the main characters! (Sadly, it actually got canceled after one season.)

  1. i’ve only seen The Witcher, but I might start watching Shadow and Bone! I loved The Witcher and read the first 3 books (they were not that good to me), and I finally fnished Six of Crows so I can finally start S&B! For Winx… I have mixed feelings because I used to be a big fan of the animation series when I was young and I’m just disappointed with how they decided to produce the live adaptation! I’m currently watching the tv show Lost and finishing Modern Family (i’m so sad)!

  2. I loved shadow and bone, and I’m glad you did too!! And ATLA is one of the best series I’ve ever watched(I’d punch anyone who’d call it a boring kids cartoon) I might try watching the other shows mentioned here as well! Great post!!
